Rome travel guide
Rome is a city where you trip over 2,000 years of history while looking for lunch. The historic center is dense — most first-time visitors try to do too much and burn out. Better to anchor in one neighborhood, walk everywhere within it, and accept that you can't see it all.
When to visit
Best months: Apr, May, Sep, Oct
Spring and fall have ideal weather. October is especially good — warm days, light crowds.
Avoid: August (hot, locals gone, many restaurants closed). July is also crowded and hot.
Where to stay
Trastevere
cobblestone, lively, food-heavy · best for dinner, evening walks
Centro Storico
Pantheon, Piazza Navona, dense and walkable · best for first-timers
Monti
boho, vintage shops, walkable to Forum · best for repeat visitors
Testaccio
local, food market, classic Roman dining · best for food deep-dive
